Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present unregistered employment as a practice of socially irresponsible companies. In order to achieve this goal, the idea of social irresponsibility was first presented. Next, attention was drawn to the negative consequences of the phenomenon of unregistered employment for employees and other stakeholders of the organization, including the state, consumers and other enterprises. Subsequently, several reasons for avoiding legal employment have been identified, referring to the results of research on determinants of socially irresponsible practices. The paper suggests that unregistered employment in Poland could be related to managers’ aspirations to maximize results, social approval for tax avoidance, perceived low efficiency of the judiciary and the collective culture of small enterprises.
