Valency of the Polish discourse and pragmatic markers of the verbal origin

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to analyze and describe valency (understood as the ability to require or permit a companionship of language elements – lexical units of specific meaning and in specific inflectional forms) of selected Polish discourse and pragmatic markers such us {nie mówiąc / nie wspominając o} (‘not to mention’), {by tak rzec, się tak wyrażę} (‘so to say’), {jak ktoś powiedział} (‘as sb said’), {że nie powiem} (‘not to say’) etc., originated from the class of verb inflectional forms both finite and non-finite. In case of the expressions in question, it is crucial to establish whether they operate only at the level of utterance or also at the level of sentence. Therefore, the author postulates that requirements from both levels, along with the prosodic features and a role in the thematic-rhematic-structure of utterance (topic-focus articulation), shall be included into the description of valency patterns of the expressions in question.
