Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the basic challenges for UN and EU missions in the establishment of financial intelligence service in Kosovo. It analyses the period from 2005 until 2016, which covers the achievements of the UNMIK Financial Information Centre (FIC-UNMIK), the EULEX Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-EULEX) and the independent Financial Intelligence Unit of Kosovo (FIU-Kosovo). The analysis reveals that Kosovo’s financial intelligence administration has dealt with most of the challenges, through international support. Joint efforts of international missions operating in Kosovo strengthen cooperation in the field of Anti-Money Laundering and AntiTerrorist Financing, both nationally and internationally. However, to date, cooperation with some of Kosovo’s neighbouring countries, including Bulgaria, is still at a relatively low level. The case presented in this paper illustrates that a well-functioning financial intelligence system is the base for the prevention of financial crimes, informal economy, corruption and organized crime.
