Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to describe innovation policy and the role of universities in innovation development. Also define what is the third mission of the university, functioning alongside the other two (education and research). The article presents the basic instruments of innovation policy and the ways of technology transfer from science to industry. Methods used in article included the analysis of national and foreign literature as well as analysis of data collected by organizations dealing with innovation policy and R&D. This article has a theoretical nature.
