Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to determine how the level of gross wages and labour costs and the proportions between them change in the public and private sectors in Poland. The article poses a research question whether the increase in international competition has caused wages and labor costs to grow faster in the private sector (exposed to competition) than in the public sector. Apart from the recognition of ownership sectors, a total of 10 sections of economic activity with the highest employment were analyzed. The article uses data published by the Central Statistical Office in the Yearbooks of Labour Statistics for 2008 and 2016. The analysis is based mainly on a comparison of percentage changes in wages and labour costs. The results of the analysis support a positive answer to the research question raised, although the level of wages and labour costs is still higher in the public sector.
