Strategy of Smart Specialisation as a Driving Force behind the Development of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises in the Region

Summary/Abstract: In line with the principles of the Europe 2020 Strategy, each region should have a regional innovation strategy (RSI3) for smart specialisation to achieve its goal of smart development. Small and medium-sized enterprises play an important role in implementing this strategy. Their growth is significantly influenced by the development of regional smart specialisations that support the creation of new enterprises based on industries characterised by a large potential for innovation and increasing R&D expenditure, provide assistance for the development of SMEs’ R&D activity, as well as transfer of knowledge, innovation and technology within the framework of the cooperation between the spheres of business and science. The aim of the paper is to analyse and evaluate opportunities for the development of small and medium-sized enterprises in smart regional specialisations based on the example of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. The first part of the paper presents the theoretical assumptions of the concept of smart specialisation and the process of entrepreneurial exploration, while the second part presents the assessment of opportunities for the development of small and medium-sized enterprises in the smart specialisations of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship.
