Summary/Abstract: According to archaeological data, the culture and the traditional medicine of the ancient Thracians who lived on the Balkan peninsula have a long standing-heritage of over 10,000 years. The millennial history of the use of medicinal plants provides evidence for an extensive practical experience that deserves further and more detailed research. The current article examines the emergence of medicine on the Balkan Peninsula and in the territory of Bulgaria, and follows how thе millenial knowledge of Thracians has contributed to European medicine, surgery, phytotherapy, phytochemistry and pharmacognosy. It also analyses the use of medicinal plants with long standing ancient tradition and their potential application in complex programs for treatment and prevention of many diseases of our time.
