Summary/Abstract: The author makes an attempt to explain the main reasons for the great variety of theoretical concepts concerning competitiveness, with special focus on national (macroeconomic) competitiveness. Among the reasons considered here are: the different attitudes of macroeconomists and management scholars, the varying levels of economic activity (macro-, mezo- and microeconomic) and, most crucially, the different theories on the drivers of national competitiveness. Three economic categories are taken into account as the foundations for the theories of national competitiveness. These are: leading market position in the world economy, called here the 'shared theory', the 'low cost theory' and the 'productivity theory'. Assuming that a good economic theory should be tradable, measurable and applicable, the author believes that the productivity theory of national competitiveness best fulfils the above criteria. M. Porter and his team at HBS have been developing such a theory for at least twenty years, with special attention to its empirical verification by quantitative estimation and its applicability by economic policy.
