Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the history of the Imperial Russian Military History Society (IRMHS). In 2012 in the Russian Federation the work of the society that existed in 1907–1917 was renewed. The article describes the specifics of the work of pre-revolutionary society, its organizational structure, publishing, composition and other issues. Particular attention is paid to the problem of creating IRMHS: different versions of the circumstances of the creation of a society and its initiators are given. In particular, the unique source — the diaries of the Guards officer Vladimir Savonko, a member of the Society since its inception is cited. His diaries contain valuable information on the difficult path of occurrence of the society, on options for its name, and the struggle between Alexandr Myshlaevsky and Mihail Sokolovsky for the leadership.
