Summary/Abstract: The article touches presents two basic theories, explaining the mechanisms of speech perception — motor and acoustic. Their confirmation is fund in an experimental examination of the identification of sounds and words by preschool children with or without articulation defects. Two methods are used: a test containing a series of 132 words, and observation. A total of 268 children have been examined. Some quantitative differences have been ascertained between the two populations, as well as some common tendencies in the qualities of the perception process. The examined persons manifested several types of behaviour and used different, in terms of informativeness, strategies in perceiving sounds and words. The data of the examination also reveal the role of the motor (kinesthetic), and of the hearing (acoustic) perception of the heard speech signals and show the interrelation between them. There has been testimony to both the motor and the acoustic theories, but it has been proved that hierarchically the acoustic signals stand higher in perceiving speech, as compared to the kinesthetic ones.
