Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes a process of emergence of the operetta genre in Kyiv. Main sources of the research were Kyivan newspapers, reviews and archive materials of the period (end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th centuries). Just then theatrical companies started to direct operetta-shows, in order to expand repertoire and attract new audience. Gradually, this "light" genre captured the attention of the local public and gained popularity, and thus there was a need to found the operetta theatre house in the city.
