On Relevance and Cognition in 20th Century Moldovan Translations

Case Study: Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher-Stowe

Summary/Abstract: The study of the mind in terms of literary translation has become a major concern in recentapproaches to translation. The present article intends to highlight the cognitive aspects of stylein Moldovan literary translations considering the relevance approach in a concrete linguisticsituation of the period. The conjectural outline of the inquiry consists of the comparativeanalysis of Romanian literary translations from Moldova and Romania. Considering the factthat Moldovan translations (mostly in the 20th century period) were realized according tocommunist ideologies, the present research tries to figure out the challenges met by Moldovantranslators in their attempt to interpret and transmit the message of a literary text; the relevanceand understanding of the source text‘s mind (by means of trope interpretation). There are twomain questions the present article will try to answer:1) How relevant did the literary text appear to 20th century Moldovan translators?2) How did translators succeed to accomplish ‗their duty‘ towards target text audience?
