Summary/Abstract: The Monastery Poganov “St. Ioan Bogoslov” is the most famous Bulgarian Middle-age monastery in the Western layouts. It was built somewhere in the period 1392 -1425 over the foundations of an even older monastery, and was later icon-painted around 1499. The wall-paining somehow broke the tradition of the straightforward interpretation of the sophisticated conflicts by making traditional compositions more modern using various symbolic and picture elements, which trend was called by the Russian Byzantologist Teodor Schmidt “early renaissance”.
