Summary/Abstract: What is already known as „German influence/impact“ (or according to some scholars as „German-Bulgarian interaction“) here is looked upon as participation in different processes in the Bulgarian society, as an element of ideas, visions, but also as penetration of innovations and experience taken/accepted from Germany. The starting position for the analysis is the understanding that the German presence was varied, dynamic, competed but also combined with other influences, suffered strong modification and adapted itself to the local Bulgarian conditions. The text outlines the main marks of the German presence in the period under investigation as well as the possible research approaches to the topic. The author takes a stand for an interpretative approach which should replace the descriptive one prevailing so far. The attention in the text is oriented to a whole, complete and comparatively integrated historical period divided into sub-periods with specific aspects, dominant characteristics and shades. The German participation in the development of Bulgaria can be interpreted in several directions: education, culture, sphere of ideas, technologies (innovations), labour organization, fashion, everyday life, etc. When reconstructing the German participation such factors as the horizon of notions and perceptions, the reception of facts and experience should be taken into consideration. It is also important to not underestimate the stereotypes, prejudices and myths acting altogether simultaneously. The article makes an attempt to set supporting points for a new, conceptual interpretation of the Bulgarian-German relations putting an accent on the traces/ the results of the German participation in different spheres of the Bulgarian development.
