Summary/Abstract: The defense lines of the medieval Hungarian kingdom in Transylvania are a good indicator for the chronology of the expansion of the Hungarian kingdom in this region. The conquest of Transylvania was a acomplished in several steps, beeing accompanied with the relocation of the defense lines. These lines consisted of earth walls, wood constructions, moats and enclosures. The author advocates the thesis that some of the abattis in Transylvania from a first period date from the 9th and 10th century, the time bevor the Hungarian conquest, and could be attributed to the local population (Pechenegs and Romanians). In a second period, (11th - 12th centruy), the Hungarian kings furtrher fortified the borderlines which were protected by Pechenegs and Szekely. In the third period, during the 13th century, the importance of the defense lines declined, and in the second half of the century, the abattis were substituted with earth or stone castles.
