Summary/Abstract: Pope John Paul II refers to the message of the Second Vatican Council about the universal vocation of Christians to holiness. Created in God’s image and likeness, man is endowed with the ability to know the truth, with freedom of choice and action, and is called to a covenant with God, to participate in the inner life of God and His holiness. With sin the mystery of “unlikeness” to God, who is Holiness and Goodness itself, makes a dramatic appearance. The event of Jesus Christ allows for a deeper understanding of the mystery of man and his highest calling. Jesus Christ, the God-man, is the perfect model of humanity and the permanent source of holiness. From an earthly point of view, holiness is a vocation and an aspiration, while in an eschatological perspective it is man’s fulfillment, that is an everlasting union with Christ. Analysis of the anthropological-theological foundations of holiness in the teaching of Bl. John Paul II shows that the saint does not renounce his humanity, but brings it to its fullest measure. Holiness brings out all the goodness and beauty of man created in the high dignity of image and likeness of God and redeemed by Christ.
