Summary/Abstract: Sándor Makkai’s literary life work can hardly be understood without the strong connections to his profession as a Calvinist/Reformed priest, as both occupations significantly determined his mindset as a thinker, as well as his intellectual image: the aesthetic experience triggered by the divine service, the communicability of the experience of God are essential elements of his ideas on theology, faith, and the church. In an art sociological approach, one has to deal with a complex phenomenon, since the issue of how and on the basis of what premises Makkai’s position as a priest and temporarily a bishop can be connected to his author role acceptance is yet to be investigated.
