SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE POPULATION OF VOJVODINA

Summary/Abstract: The following basic tendencies were noticed in the development of the population of Vojvodina: decrease in the birthrate, increase in the mortality rate and decline of the total number of the population living in the territory of Vojvodina. Migrations abroad (first to find jobs, and later due to unfavourable events in the country and war disturbances) were more pronounced, and then a strong immigrational wave from the former Yugoslav republics to Vojvodina. The paper analyzes the results of the population census from 2002 in relation to the former 1991 census, combining them with the facts about the vital statistics and the facts from the records concerning the applications for permanent residence and emigration of citizens. The strongest factor which influenced the results of the census was contained in the negative natural increase and in the higher number of the inhabitants of Vojvodina leaving to work and stay abroad. Such a situation was to a certain degree changed after the arrival of the refugee population and foreigners who work and reside in Vojvodina.
