Summary/Abstract: Against the general background of contemporary history, the article presents a number of refl ections on the political and social transformations of Iraq and the Middle East. The analysis starts with the outcome of World War I, which brought about the domination of Great Britain and France in the Middle East – a domination that emphsised the need for national independence. In the circumstances of the weakness of political parties and virtual absence of the civil society, the political initiative was undertaken by the military on the path of achieving national independence, and later – of the sole governance of the country. The consequences of such an undemocratic, authoritarian regime became evident during the last two decades. The article additionally follows up the doctrinal expression of that authoritarian rule in Iraq and points out to its fatal consequences for the country and the Middle East.
