Summary/Abstract: Comparing the person and the activities of two Russian diplomats from the second half of the 17th century, the article investigates the evolution of Russia’s place and role in the Westphalian sovereignty. The essence of this system is the rivalry of the French king Louis XIV and the Austrian Habsburgs. Russia, solving its geopolitical problems, withdraws from its orientation to France after the conclusion of the Truce of Andrusovo. Russia approaches the Habsburgs and at the same time starts a war with the Ottoman Empire. Its military and diplomatic success make Russia a leading political force in East and Southeast Europe. This contributes to the level of the Russian diplomacy.
