Summary/Abstract: The Carpatho-Rusyns in Romania are a minority which is officially recognized, statistically ranging among the small ethnic groups of Romania, although their actual number might be far higher. A still underdeveloped group identity, restricted knowledge of the cultural and lingustic Rusyn heritage, and the fact that most Romanian Rusyns still consider themselves to be Ukrainian put a strain on the identity-building process. The recent Ukrainian crisis, shedding new light on the denied recognition of Carpatho-Rusyns in Western Ukraine, has stepped up the identity discourse among Romanian Rusyns.
