Summary/Abstract: As part of a more comprehensive research endeavour, regarding Romanian elites within theFrench exile, this study argues in favour of the attractiveness of France during the interwar period and thesinuous years of the Fourth Republic, in the eyes of intellectual elites from Central and Eastern Europe. Theinsight into a certain tradition the French Republic had in this respect, especially regarding its relations withPoland, is furthered by an analysis of the favourable factors making the Republic a safe haven for ananticommunist diaspora seeking an effective way of promoting its message, including the participation ofCentral and East-European states in the process of European construction. In spite of political instability,France maintained a key role on the stage of international affairs and gained new prominence with itsdecisive participation in European construction and other major cross-border initiatives.
