Summary/Abstract: The international dimension and the European realpolitic, while guaranteeing some refugee protection, have not yet succeeded in bringing about a real transformation in the security paradigm, in line with the concept of human security (HS). On the contrary, it has maintained security as a radicalized vision resulting from a process of increasing securitization. After a brief introduction to the concept of HS exploring some of its strengths and limitations, this paper analysis the refugee crisis in Europe, since 2015, mainly looking at the Central Mediterranean route. It then describes the response of the international community highlighting some of the policies that have been followed by the European Union (EU). Lastly, it questions whether the EU's responses have succeeded in legitimizing an effective policy implementation of the HS concept. It argues that the HS is a broad, but unfinished, framework for protecting refugee rights, since it attempts to replicate the status quo in Europe.
