Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to answer the question whether the duration of marriage influences causes of marriage dissolution resulting in separation, and if yes, what the impact is. The tool used in the article is the chi-square goodness-of-fit test. The analysis gives the following conclusions: 1) Problem of alcohol relatively rarely affects marriages of short (i.e. up to 9 years) and very long (i.e. at least 25 years) duration of marriage. 2) Discrepancy of characters as a reason of marriage dissolution leading to separation often occurs at the very beginning of marriage and also when people are together for many years (for 25 years or more). 3) Financial misunderstandings are the most common cause of separation for couples of marriage duration not exceeding 15 years. 4) Housing problems are typical for young marriages – marriages lasting less than 9 years.
