Summary/Abstract: Aristophanes, the Athenian comic playwright, is often said to be the inventor of limericks. The author of the paper attempts to answer the question of the origin of that opinion. He also draws attention to the fact that there are some limericks or allusions to this genre in several English translations of Aristophanes’ comedies.
