Summary/Abstract: The article explores some of the theoretical and disciplinary challenges in the conceptualization of parenting and the perspectives for overcoming the corresponding difficulties. The author identifies and investigates three major lines of differences between the theoretical perspectives on parenting: universalist-pluralist, gender-neutral – gender-sensitive and child-centred – parent-centred perspectives. Research of the diverse and fragmented contemporary parenting practices and family structures requires a common, interdisciplinary basis for understanding the various aspects of the parenting experience. A starting point for such an understanding could be the conceptualization of parenting in terms of the parenting practices. Based on existing research and typologies of parenting practices a concept of parenting is proposed as a set of activities and responsibilities in six interrelated domains of human experience – economic, interactional, interpretative, physical, cognitive and affective.
