Summary/Abstract: Individual differences are mainly subject of differential psychology, and traditionally they attract the research interest to the creation of psychological typologies, diagnostic procedures and methods. The theme has though a different sounding in counseling psychology and in psychotherapy. The paper deals with classical psychoanalytical approaches of Z. Freud and K. Horney, of cognitive-behavioral psychology and practice, as well as to the existential psychotherapy. Special attention is paid to the person centered approach of Carl Rogers, where without assessments or diagnoses, but through empathy various sides of the person are being integrated in a congruent and behaviorally effective “self-concept”. Rogers’ contribution to overcoming various differences and conflicts – interpersonal, ethnic, religious, and political, while working in “encounter groups” and large cross-cultural communities – is emphasized.
