Summary/Abstract: English translation of Norwid’s early poem Italiam! Italiam! is analysed by means of katena method and Prof. Puzynina’s assumptions. The trochaic structure of the original poem and its polysemantic meaning impede the proper selection of translation strategy. The carefully copied metrical form of the text does not exert the same effect in the target language as in the source one. The results of the analysis show that Laskowski’s translation also diverges from Norwid’s lyric in all other aspects that create the poem’s identity. Its English version is a more cheerful, less profound and one-sided copy of the original.
