Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the artistic evolution and major stylistic characteristics of Adomas Galdikas, one of the most prominent painters of the first half of the 20th century Lithuania. It pays much attention to his relations with contemporary artists, with the Lithuanian folk art tradition as well as to his responses to different influences received form the West. It considers the main periods of Galdikas’s artistic evolution during his living in Lithuania, Germany, France, and the USA and highlights their stylistic characteristics together with of peculiarities of used expressive means. In more details there are discussed the latest period of his artistic development during which he was greatly influenced by the Eastern Asia tradition of spontaneous painting and created distinctive version of abstract expressionism.
