Summary/Abstract: Sharp increase of Western Balkans’ asylum seekers in the EU following the visa liberalisation made the EU decision-makers reconsider of the conditions under which these countries could benefit from the visa-waiver in the future. Re-introduction of a visa requirement, which could follow as a consequence of the rising numbers of unfunded asylum claims, would be one of the rare EU decisions with direct consequences for Serbian citizens. The EU has so far successfully utilised conditionality as a method in Serbia’s EU integration process – however, in this particular case, such approach would bring minimal, or even counterproductive results, as the real solution lies in the hands of the member states. As long as the EU does not have integrated and harmonised asylum policy, managing the Schengen area will remain flawed, while the visa liberalisation policy, as the EU’s foreign policy asset, will risk of being sidelined.
