Summary/Abstract: Digital imaging offers ti the archives many possibilities in protecting archival documents and facilitating access to them, that significantly differ from traditional techniques like microfilming. Technical characteristics of the equipment and of the images, shortly described in this paper, should be considered as only a part of the problem of the implementation of digital imaging technology in archives. More important is that digital copy of an original document has to meet requirements for electronic records if it the purpose of imaging is security and long term preservation of records and not to produce a reference copy without the value of record. Intellectual control of digital images differs in some extent from how microfilm copies are managed. Indexing of digital images and metadata control should be considered an integral part of the imaging. It brings imaging closer to the archival description and underlines the need for integration of products of different archival functions in an integrated information system.
