Summary/Abstract: The article concerns one of major contentious questions in bilateral relations between France and Germany after the Second World War. As the conflict, which occurred after 1919, escalated during late 40s and early 50s, new conceptions of its settlement were elaborated. One of them, presented by Marinus van der Goes van Naters implied transformation of the Saar into European territorial unit. Being accepted by the parts of conflict, it was introduced in one of the Paris Agreements of 1954. It was stated in the document that final decision concerning the Europeanization of the Saar would be made on the basis of the result of the referendum which was to be held in October 1955. The Saar population rejected the Europeanization of the Saar and opted for the annexation with Federal Re-public of Germany. The aim of the article is to consider how the conflict between France and Germa-ny influenced the outcome of the referendum.
