Summary/Abstract: The author presents initial results from her observations on the basic functions of the family within the examined group - Bulgarian immigrant families in the USA. The research objectives are to examine to what extent these functions are influenced by the act of emigration and the processes of adaptation and acculturation. The discussed functions are the reproductive, the adaptive, taking care of children and their socialization, sexual control in the family. The changes in the linguistic competence and name system of the Bulgarian families in emigration are also traced back. The data are acquired from the author’s personally conducted interviews among immigrants in several cities in the USA. The proposed text is part of a greater research project entitled “Immigrants of the first generation”, held in 2000-2001.
