Summary/Abstract: “If we think that our terms are understood by everyone in the same way, we are mistaken, and this mistake, unfortunately, is not only the fate of beginners,” writes Miroslav Hroch in the opening section of his essay. While revisiting the two terms crucial for both his essay and this very issue – “Central Europe” and “the formation of a modern nation” – Hroch challenges myths and rumours of Central Europe, focusing thereby on the Czech national movement. It is this inspiring essay, written in an eloquent style so characteristic of Miroslav Hroch’s work, that gave grounds for the collection of articles presented in this special issue of The Annual of Language & Politics and Politics of Identity.
