Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to analyse images of Šančiai and related stereotypes that circulated in the Lithuanian press in 3–4 decades of the twentieth century. Images of Šančiai have not been studied yet, therefore are important to be revealed. Using periodical sources, the article focuses on the stereotypes of Šančiai people – the social and national stratification. The article mostly analyses the image of Šančiai that was related to the roads, pavements, lightning and general public order during the interwar period. Moreover, the research reveals the image of Šančiai formed by the Lithuanian press, describing leisure and cultural life of inhabitants of Šančiai. Lastly, the article discusses the way criminal offences influenced formation of the negative stereotypes of this suburb. Finally, it is worth mentioning that authors of the interwar articles preferred copying and repeating thoughts from each other rather than expressing the opposite opinion.
