Summary/Abstract: In this review article we present the misinformation effect and possibilities of its reduction. We present definition of this effect as well as its social mechanisms. We also describe methods of its reduction such as: warning against misinformation, collaborative recall, and reinforced self-affirmation procedure. We emphasize social aspect of yielding to misinformation and mechanisms through which the presented techniques reduce susceptibility to misinformation. Future directions in research on the misinformation effect are also presented.
