Summary/Abstract: The analysis of statistics plays a critical role in the professional sports industry. In particular, organizations such as sports broadcasters make ample use of statistics and ensure a wealth of data is available for data mining applications. Commonly, this data is used colloquially to justify predictions about a player or team's future performance. Our study takes a scientific approach to such predictions by applying classification models to data from the National Basketball Association, the professional basketball league in the United States. We utilize different attribute selection and classification techniques to select the model with the highest performance, then apply that model to more recent data to predict which teams will advance to the playoffs.
