Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the testament from December 1st 1823 of the Wallachian merchant Cernea Popovici, born in Plovdiv. The author pays attention to the traditional elements in the merchants’ testaments while mostly pointing out two original moments in the Chernea Popovici case: the autobiographical data and history of the estates acquired by the merchant and the economic improvements made in them. Although the testament was pronounced null and void in 1826, its contents are interesting, because they reveal the history of one of the many representatives of the merchant society in Wallachia, who left the lands south of Danube and looked for their success abroad. The appendix covers the full translation in Bulgarian of the testament, which follows the version of the Rumanian Academy library.
