Summary/Abstract: The partisan unit “Nepodległość” (Independence), under the command of captain Eugeniusz Kokolski “Grożny”, operated in the area of Szadek from October 1945 to February 1946. This military group fought the communist regime by attacking communist police stations and state institutions such as cooperatives and post offices. The money captured in those actions were used to pay the soldiers, secure the weapons for the troop and pay the informants. The partisans operated in Szadek and in the region (Zadzim, Lichawa, Wierzchy, Małyń). Some members of this group, e.g. Zenon Słowiński “Czapla”, Stanisław Brzozowski “Kopacz” and Władysław Kupiś, served prison sentences. After the collapse of the communist system the court annulled the sentences passed in the postwar period, declaring that the activity of “Czapla” and “Kopacz” should be regarded as fighting for independence of Poland.
