Translating Colloquial Texts: Challenges and Specific Competencies

Summary/Abstract: This articles aims to provide a brief overview of the challenges posed by the process of translating colloquial texts and the specific competences a translator needs in order to carry out successfully such a mission. Firstly we will establish the scope of the term “colloquial” and point out the general features of colloquial texts as well as the challenges they pose for a novice translator. Secondly, we will revise the theoretical approach to the translation competences. Finally, by analyzing short passages of literary texts translated from Spanish into Romanian and adopting the functional perspective of Christiane Nord, we will draw up conclusions on the specific competences a translator should own and strategies through which those competences can be developed.
