Summary/Abstract: Dietrich von Hildebrand is one of the most influential of twentieth-century laymen. His thinking has been taken into serious consideration in the teaching of the Catholic Church on marriage. In his works we can also find the basis of what since the Second Vatican Council has been called conjugal spirituality. This is founded on the idea that the sacrament of marriage is a vocation to holiness whose final purpose is eternal life with God. Von Hildebrand says that all kinds of help is available in the Catholic Church to live this vocation properly. He emphasized the role of the sacraments and of fidelity to the doctrine of the Church as a most fitting way of living this vocation. True spiritual understanding of the meaning of matrimony and consequently the life of a spouse might be a remedy for the lack of a spiritual vision of marriage today. The article is divided into 4 parts: Hildebrand’s ecclesiology; grace and the sacraments, Unum necessarium – plan of the conjugal life; purposes of conjugal spirituality.
