Summary/Abstract: The article concerns the development of extracurricular education among the Polish population in Galicia. The study is based on available printed sources and the Galician press. Reading rooms, libraries and folk houses run by the Folk High School Society were among the first permanent ed-ucational institutions in rural areas and small towns in Galicia. For several decades, members of the Society popularized readership, distributed books and magazines, and organized lectures, which often was a considerable challenge, especially in remote locations. Although majority of the tasks were performed by volunteers, often without proper qualifications, in the early years of the twentieth century the Society fulfilled its role. This is evidenced by diaries, in which the founders and activists of the Society were commendably mentioned.
