Summary/Abstract: The essay focuses on Bruno Schulz’s drawing, "Three Figures" 1935 (cardboard, pencil, black watercolor, 31.5 × 32 cm), preserved in the collection of the Art Museum at theEin Harod kibbutz in Israel. For many years, Schulz specialists have not taken it intoconsideration. The drawing is a first-rate finished composition, signed and dated by theartist. The conversation of three characters may be an illustration to the short story“Spring” [Wiosna], showing Photographer, Father, and Joseph, or perhaps some unknown Schulz’s acquaintances. The drawing was donated to the museum at Ein Harod by thelawyer, Dr. Michał Chajes, in 1957. Thanks to Marla Raucher-Osborn’s help, some facts from Chajes’s biography have been established. Born in Drogobych, he was Schulz’s friend since their youth. He survived the Holocaust and after the Second World War lived inCracow, collecting works of Jewish artists, some of which are now in the holdings of theJewish Historical Institute in Warsaw. The drawing in question should be added to the catalogue raisonneé of Schulz’s works, while the activity of Chajes as a collector deserves further investigation.
