Summary/Abstract: During a field survey North of the village Sebiş (Şieuţ commune, Bistriţa-Năsăud County) an unknown Dacian fortification was identified on the westernmost part of Dealul Feţii (Feţii Hill) (Fig. 1-3, Pl. I-II). The structure appeared to have been an inland promontory fortification inhabited in the 2nd century BC. Also in the Căliman Piedmont other two contemporary Dacian fortifications are known at Dumitriţa (Pl. III/1) and Ardan (Pl. III/2), as well as a third one at Monor (Pl. IV/1-2), whose chronology is less certain. Together they form a defense line established most probably against the Bastarnian incursions across the Eastern Carpathians, starting from northern Moldavia. The extension of this fortification line northwards to reach the Bistriţa River with other three points possibly contemporary is at present highly problematic (Pl. V-VII). The foray of groups of Bastarnian warriors from the North of Moldavia into Transylvania in the first half of the 2nd century BC is a recent archaeological concern. Far from being solved, the Bastarnian presence is proven only by few pottery fragments that were found in the settlements from Moreşti and Şeuşa, both on the Mureş river. It is worth mentioning that the coin hoards from the first half of the 2nd century BC known in north-eastern Transylvania appear to have been buried in at least two chronological phases, most probably also due to Bastarnian raids. This scenario can concur with the text of Pompeius Trogus, transmitted by Iustinus (XXXII, 3, 16), informing on the conflicts between the Dacian king Oroles and the Bastarnians.
