„Theatre Criticism”: the borders of function in contemporary Ukrainian theatre process

Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the need to analyze the interpretation of the term „theater criticism” and revision of established views on this concept. Unfortunately, the understanding of the basic tasks and functions of theater criticism is often limited by modern reflections. Also sometimes the hermeneutical function of criticism is unjustifiably ignored. We cannot forget about the scientific understanding of the theatrical process component. The specificity of theater criticism as a kind of artistic creativity found some generalization at the „Code of Practice” of the International Association of Theatre Critics. All of these factors directly influenced on the formation of an indefinite space of criticism in today’s theatrical process. More and more often quite inaccurate phrase „theater journalism” can be found at scientific literature. The situations with difficult delimitation of theater criticism function today even more overdue in Ukraine. Due to economic conditions, the situation of publishing media, the need for reform of theater arts and education, with a change in the reader’s consciousness, the theater criticism is increasingly turning into a hobby. Is there a future for the profession of theater critic, and what transformations can comprehend it?
