Exhibition "Braşov pictures - art and document"

Summary/Abstract: Brasov is one of the few cities that have consistently attracted sustained interest of local and foreign artists. This was due to the particular aspect of its architecture and landscape, both giving rise to aesthetic emotions. Graphical representations of the city from the XVII-XX, beyond their artistic qualities, have in many cases, a strong documentary value for the image of the city and its buildings, some missing today, before the invention of photography.The graphics, engraving and photography exhibition "Brasov Pictures – Art and document, open in three halls of the Museum of Art Brasov between May 14 to July 18, 2010, marked this year the 775 years of the first documentary mention of Brasov.The exhibition was conducted in collaboration with the Romanian Academy, Brasov National Archives and some collectors who have lent pieces from their collections, and was accompanied by a catalog. It included images of the city on maps of Transylvania from XVII-XIX centuries, city plans, prints, drawings, watercolors and photographs. To provide more comprehensive information the exhibition was supplemented by documentary material - replicas of the city's representation that could not be displayed in original and text panels, on which were cited descriptions of Brasov made by foreign travelers and scholars of the XVI-XIX centuries (Johannes Honterus, Sebastian Münster, Giovanandrea Gromo, Antonio Possevino, Ludwig Rohbock, Charles Boner, John Paget). Same end, a touch screen continuously ran images of photographs of the city from the late nineteenth century, which could not be exposed, made by Leopold Adler and Carl Muschalek from Brasov.
