Summary/Abstract: The paper offers a discussion concerning unpublished historical data on the establishment and formation of the Žemaičių Kalvarijos religious centre in the mid-17th century. On the grounds of sources never published before, attempt is made to prove that in 1638 bishop Jurgis Tiškevičius undertook to establish a pilgrimage centre devoted to the Passion of Jesus, and only later, in 1642, entrusted the Dominican Order with its wardship. The contribution of noblemen of the Great Duchy of Lithuania and of Jesuits to the formation of the Calvary complex is elucidated and doubt is thrown on whether the Dominican monks as an organized group could participate in the initial stage of the works. Also, employing new data as well as the reconstructive and the comparative methods, analysis is given to the mid-17th century plan structure of the Cross Route and to its connection with the map of Jerusalem compiled by Ch. Adrichomius, a Dutch scholar, late in the 16th century; a fragmentary reconstruction of the view of the complex of the church and the chapels is presented.
