Summary/Abstract: The paper looks into the works of Lev Zalmanovich Eidlin (1910–1985), the prominent Russian sinologist and literature researcher who was the student and colleague of Academician V.M. Alekseev. The connection of L.Z. Eidlin’s works, from brief notes in journals to monographs, with the atmosphere of the Soviet era is demonstrated; the main topics and evolution of his research are traced down; the main points of his methodology are ascertained in understanding the peculiarity of the Chinese literature (the relations of literature and culture, culture and historical reality, time and worldview). Furthermore, the translation activity of the scientist is considered in detail. L.Z. Eidlin translated from Chinese language during his entire creative life and believed that the study of national phenomena and their adequate representation by means of the Russian language can not exist in isolation, without each other. Based on particular examples, the lines of literary and artistic transformation of the original are revealed and the conventional model for translation of hieroglyphic poetry into Russian is defined. The lines of this transformation are understood by us as the specific techniques used by L.Z. Eidlin to more or less objectively convey the meaning of the ancient Chinese poetic script: absence of rhyme; complete transfer of the image system; retention of expressive sounds and parallelisms; extremely informative and voluminous explanatory comments.
