Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the rivalry between the United States and the German Empire in Latin America in the late 19th and early 20th century. This conflict led to the modernized interpretation of the Monroe Doctrine as a key principle of the U.S. foreign policy. It is shown that the Venezuela crisis of 1902–1903 resulted in the adoption of the Roosevelt Corollary, thus securing the dominant position of the United States in the Western Hemisphere. It is concluded that the competition with Germany for economic and geopolitical influence in the Latin-American region became one of the factors transforming the U.S. diplomacy.
