Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the semantic content of the terms mass, crowd and public as considered by the researchers of the 20th century. The problem of contradictions among the systems of different researchers as well as within one and the same concept is raised. This study gradually proves the absence of any unified theory of mass since the theorists of mass society explore different concepts and phenomena. The causes of incorrect confusion regarding the meanings of the terms crowd, mass and public are analyzed.
